ABOUTT

​​​Art is my way of making sense of life's experiences, like love, loss or joy, not with representational storytelling but through the elements of visual art - colour, texture and gestural marks. I aim to make work that balances drama with harmony and abstraction with emotional truth. In a world that sometimes feels harsh and overwhelming, beautiful works of art offer a chance to reconnect to something uplifting and inspirational, something that enriches our lives.

My home town is Worthing, on the UK coast, between the South Downs and the English Channel. I started drawing at an early age and developed my skills by copying from reproductions of Old Masters in art history books. I was kicked out of art lessons when I was 14, after a row with the teacher, and left school as soon as legally possible, without qualifications. Over the next 10 years, when I wasn’t on the dole, I worked in a variety of dead-end jobs and continued with art in my spare time.

 

​Eventually, I was so fed up with my  life that I went back to education as a mature student and gained a degree in art history, which led to a job at the National Gallery. Wanting to develop my art practice, I spent a year at Chelsea College of Art on a Foundation Studies course. After that, I took a job in magazine publishing, which turned into a fifteen-year career, ending with a dream job on the magazine of The Art Fund.

 

After more than twenty years in London, I moved to Mid Wales, living first in a remote hillside hamlet and then in Aberystwyth. A year later, I moved back to Worthing to pursue a new career as an artist.
