Timber groynes are designed to control the movement of sand and pebbles parallel to the shore line by wave action, known as longshore drift, and to deflect nearshore tidal currents. When I was a kid, sun bathing on the beach at the end of our road, my sisters and I called these wooden structures breakwaters, we didn't know about longshore drift, they were just part of our landscape.
