Rust is an iron oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of moisture. Given sufficient time, any iron mass in the presence of water and oxygen could eventually convert entirely to rust. If salt is present, for example in seawater or salt spray, iron tends to rust more quickly, and you can see the natural process taking place on the nuts and bolts of the timber groynes along Worthing beach.
